Firm: Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc.

Role on the Project: Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR)

What are you working on right now at The Village at Providence Point?

Right now, our focus is on preparing the site to ensure safety, environmental compliance, and a smooth transition into vertical construction. While these early phases may be less visible than when structures actually begin to rise, they are critical to the project’s success. Work typically begins with careful management to minimize site disturbance, including the installation of enhanced erosion and sediment controls (super silt fencing, sediment traps, and silt ponds). Clearing and grubbing operations are coordinated alongside tree grinding, with deliberate tree protection measures put in place to preserve designated trees and maintain important views. Security fencing and stabilized construction entrances are installed to protect the site and surrounding areas. The site is also being prepared for underground utilities, which will get us ready for the next phases of construction.

Tell us about something happening on the project that might not be obvious to the community?

One thing most people never see is how much of this project is built long before crews ever step on site. We use Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) to digitally coordinate the Building Information Model from both designers and trade partners, working through conflicts and constructability issues early instead of discovering them in the field. That upfront work reduces delays, limits rework and helps keep the project moving efficiently once construction is visible to the community. In short, fewer surprises on site means a smoother, safer build for everyone.

What exactly does Howard Shockey bring to the table as a long-term partner?
